‘C'est ici. Ce n'est pas ici’ means ‘here but not here’ in english. The title for this work came about after imagining that the surface looked like a fossil and the words ‘presence’ and ‘absence’ kept coming up for me. These moments of uncovering during spring offer us a way to examine memories or experiences that have been crystallized in our body and minds; Parts of the self that we must acknowledge as articulations of time.
This painting has had many iterations before arriving at what you see before you. I’ve always felt that paintings with many layers have a certain depth to them; perhaps because they resemble our own layered experience as humans.
